Squeaking noise from the steering column area that isn’t the clock spring, any other culprits

There’s this faint but persistent squeaking sound coming from somewhere right behind the steering wheel on my 2017 430i, and it’s most noticeable when I’m making small steering corrections at low speeds like parking or navigating tight roundabouts, not the full lock turns where you’d normally hear suspension noises. It’s definitely inside the cabin and not from the steering rack or tie rods, and it’s not the classic clock spring ribbon cable noise because it doesn’t happen in a rhythmic pattern with the wheel rotation, it’s more random like something is rubbing or flexing. I’ve stuck my head under the dash with a flashlight and I can’t see anything obvious touching the column, and I’m reluctant to start pulling the steering wheel apart myself because airbag and all that.
